Clubhouse Knowledge Base

What is Clubhouse?

Clubhouse is a place for casual, drop-in audio chats. When you open the app you can see “rooms” full of people talking—all open so you can hop in and out, exploring different conversations. It’s a place to meet with friends and with new people around the world—to tell stories, ask questions, debate, learn, and have impromptu conversations on thousands of different topics.

There are a lot of questions we get asked often, so we figured we’d start writing them down 🙂 We’ll continue adding to this as we get more great questions!

Who is Clubhouse for?

We are building Clubhouse for everyone and working to open it up to the world as fast as possible. We just want to make sure that as we scale, it’s a great experience for everyone, so we’re adding new users in waves. To join, anyone can sign up on the waitlist (and reserve their username) or skip the waitlist by getting an invite from a current user.

Quick tour

When you first open the app after completing the onboarding process, you’ll see the home screen (also referred to as the “feed,” “hallway,” “all rooms screen,” or “lobby”).

Here are some important parts of it, starting from the top left, moving clockwise:

  • Explore: tap on the magnifying glass icon to find people and clubs to follow from a wide variety of topics!
  • Invites: when you have invites available, you’ll see an envelope icon; tap to send invites!
  • Upcoming calendar: tap the calendar icon to see upcoming events and shows.
  • Activity feed: tap the bell icon to see recent notifications about contacts who just joined the app, new followers, invites to join clubs, messages from Clubhouse support, etc.
  • User profile: tap on the photo at the top right (or photo slot if you haven’t added a profile pic yet) to navigate to your user profile, edit it, and access settings and important links.
  • Who’s online: the “online” button at the lower right of your home screen takes you to a screen, also known as the “sidebar,” where you can see which of your friends are online. You can also just swipe right-to-left from the main screen to get to there!
  • Start a room: tap the big green button to start a new room, then choose the type of room, and hit go!
  • Rooms: if there are rooms live, you’ll see them in the feed, with title, names of speakers, names of listeners that you follow, and the number of participants. Tap to join!

How can I meet people?

There are many ways to discover people in Clubhouse! Here are just a few of them:

  • Onboarding: if you connected your contacts and/or Twitter accounts, you should see some personalized recommendations for people to follow.
  • Explore: tap on the magnifying glass icon to find the Explore page! Here you can find conversations on a wide variety of topics, from storytelling to sci-fi, along with people and clubs to follow.
  • Upcoming calendar: tap the calendar icon to see upcoming events and shows! This can be a great way to find topics and conversations that are interesting to you, as well as event hosts and speakers that you’d be excited to get to know.
  • Clubs: joining and participating in clubs can help you meet users with shared interests.
  • User profiles: when you visit any user’s profile, you’ll see a “star” button next to the “follow” button; tap on it to see users that may be similar!
  • Inside rooms!: the best way to discover and meet more amazing people is to join rooms, browse other participants’ profiles, get in on the discussions, and make connections! You’ll even see some public “welcome” rooms for new users—feel free to join in!

What “roles” can a user can have?

Conversations in Clubhouse take place in rooms, and this is where all the magic happens. Within each room, you can be a moderator, a speaker, or a listener.

  • Moderators. When you start a room in Clubhouse, you are the moderator. This means you are a speaker with the special power to add, mute, and remove other speakers. You can access these tools by tapping on the photo of any user in the room. “Mods” guide the conversation and have a strong influence on the content and style of conversation. The best moderators tend to thoughtfully curate the speaker group, actively manage the conversation, and consider the audience experience.
  • Speakers. Speakers are the people in a room who have the ability to talk. By default, the person who starts the room is a speaker, and so is the first person to join them on stage. Everyone else joins in the audience as a listener, and must be invited up if they wish to speak, or listeners can raise their hand to ask to speak. Move yourself off the stage by tapping on your own photo. Successful speakers tend to share the stage, know when to mute (and unmute), and aren’t shy about bowing out when they want to.
  • Listeners. When you tap to join an existing conversation, you enter in the audience on mute. This means you are a listener! As a listener on Clubhouse, you should relax and enjoy the conversation.

I sent an invite, but they never got it, help!

If you weren’t able to complete sending the imessage, please note, once you tap “invite” on the invite screen, the contact is immediately pre-approved and the invite is “spent.” Even if you don’t send the imessage they will still be able to download the app and join.

Confirm the phone number is correct (just ask the invitee)! Then, check your phone contact book to make sure the correct number is saved.

Then, have your invitees try these steps:

  • For users: download the app here — https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id1503133294. For International users: search the local Apple App store for “Clubhouse”
  • After downloading the app and entering your phone number (must be the same number the invite was sent to), you’ll need to enter a verification code (OTP) sent to you via SMS.

Can I take back an invite or redirect it once sent?

We unfortunately cannot cancel, rescind, or redirect invites once sent, so we ask that you check with invitees before sending that they’re interested in joining, on iOS, and that you have the correct phone number. For context on invites in general, we have moved to automatically giving out invites to reward members’ contributions in the community.

How can I start a club?

We’re excited to announce that you can now create clubs directly in the app! 🎉 We want to thank everyone for their patience while we’ve worked to make this feature more accessible.

Here’s how to get your club set up in-app:

  • Navigate to your profile page and scroll to the “Member of” section near the bottom.
  • There you will see a “+” sign to the right of your last club badge (note: if you’re a member of many clubs, you’ll have to scroll to the end of your club list to locate the plus).
  • Tap the icon, and create your club!

Note that you will only be able to create one club at a time and you won’t be able to delete a club directly in-app, so choose wisely and be thoughtful!

Can I change my username (@handle)?

We get a lot of requests from people who would like to change their username so we built the ability to do that in the app (download the latest app version)!

To do this, just go to your profile and tap your existing username. Please note you can only do this once, as we want to make sure that people on Clubhouse always know who they are talking with, so choose wisely 🙂

Can I change my name?

Clubhouse is a real name service, but occasionally people enter their names incorrectly on sign up. To help with this, we’ve added the ability to make a one-time correction to your Full Name in the app. We will still enforce our real name policy but understand there may be errors, shortened names (e.g. Matt vs. Matthew), etc. that could be important to you!

If you are an artist who is publicly known by your creator name, you can now add your Creator Name in the app so that people in rooms with you know what to call you.

To make a one-time correction to your Full Name (or if you’re a public figure, to make a one-time addition of your Creator Name), just tap your name on your user profile and select the appropriate option. A big thank you to everyone who’s patiently waited for this feature 😇

Can I change the phone number on my account?

We unfortunately do not have a way to change the phone number on an account right now. We’re working on making it possible to keep your account or transfer it in upcoming releases. Here’s some additional info to help right now:

  • If you’re able to keep access to both phone numbers at once, we’re hoping to be able to manually change it for you soon and will have more info on this soon.
  • If you’ve already lost access to the old phone number, we unfortunately wouldn’t be able to transfer your old account to your new phone number.
  • The fastest way to make sure you still have access to Clubhouse if your phone number changes is to create a new account (it will be a blank slate!). Reminder that we have a one person – one account policy, so maintaining two accounts is against our guidelines.

Again, apologies that we don’t have this as a self-serve feature yet, and thank you for your understanding and patience!
