Starting a Clubhouse club

What is a Clubhouse club?

For context, we see clubs as a way to host a series of intimate conversations with a defined community of people. We want to see clubs grow into communities of people that come together regularly based on shared interests, identities, activities, and more!

We ask for club founders to commit to host a recurring meetup (and as many ad hoc ones as you want!).

  • How can I start a club? We’re excited to announce that you can now create clubs directly in the app! 🎉 We want to thank everyone for their patience while we’ve worked to make this feature more accessible. Here’s how to get your club set up in-app:
    • Navigate to your profile page and scroll to the “Member of” section near the bottom.
    • There you will see a “+” sign to the right of your last club badge (note: if you’re a member of many clubs, you’ll have to scroll to the end of your club list to locate the plus).
    • Tap the icon, and create your club!

Note that you will only be able to create one club at a time and you won’t be able to delete a club directly in-app, so choose wisely and be thoughtful!

  • Why can’t I set up a club? Thanks so much for your interest in building communities on Clubhouse! The new in-app club setup feature is available now for folks who are actively engaged in Clubhouse and thus can hopefully have a great community launch! Here are some common reasons you may not be able to set up a club at this time:
    • We ask that folks set up one club at a time, so if you’ve recently set one up, please wait before creating another. If you need help managing your current club, just let us know!
    • Please check that your email address has been connected in the app (instructions here)

If you have not recently set up a club, have your email address verified, and remain active in Clubhouse, club creation should be available to you soon!

  • How can I get information from my previously submitted club request? If you have submitted a club request in the past and would like to get a copy of the club title or bio from that submission, contact us here 🙂Please be sure the email address you’re using is connected to your clubhouse account, and is the same one you used to submit your club request.

Finishing your club setup

  • Where can I find my club in the app?
    1. Go to your Clubhouse profile. There you should see the words “Member of” and the club “badge.”
    2. If you click on the badge, it’ll take you to the club page. You’ll see your name listed as a member! A club creator is by default a founder (admin).
  • How do I edit my club profile and settings?
    • To add a logo / photo from your camera roll, tap on the badge slot on the group page.
    • To change your Club name or description, please contact us with the name of your club and your username. We have a limit of 25 characters for the name and 150 characters for the description.
    • To edit settings, tap the 3 dots at the top right of your club page to edit settings (only visible to club founders / admins)
      • You can specify that you don’t want people to be able to follow your club
      • You can also hide your member list if you don’t want it displayed on your club page
  • How do I add club co-founders (co-admins)?Once someone is a member, any admin can decide to make them an co-founder (co-admin)To make another member an founder, go to the club profile and tap on the club member
    • You’ll see a prompt with the option “make an admin”
    • You can also remove someone from the founder role or from the club

Being a club founder 101

  • What are the different types of club members?
    • A club can have founders (admins), members, and followers (optional).
    • Founders choose who to invite, add as members, and can start public Club-branded rooms
    • Members can nominate people to join for founders to review. Members can start private Club-branded rooms, but this will only notify Club members who follow them. Members cannot host public Club-branded rooms.
  • How do I invite people to join the club?To add a member, click on the icon at the top right of the club page. You’ll see 4 options:
    • Copy secret invite link: you can share this link with someone if you don’t have their phone number (note: this link isn’t unique, so it could be forwarded by that individual)
    • Review nominated members: members of the group who aren’t founders can now suggest members to the group; you can review these suggestions and accept or reject from here.
    • Search Clubhouse: You can invite anyone on Clubhouse who follows you (this is to prevent spam). These invites are unlimited, and do not utilize your available club invites.
    • Search Contacts: You can invite anyone off Clubhouse that is in your contact list. Invitees will get a text including your name and your club name.

    A couple of notes:

    • We only support iOS, and some international carriers block text invites.
    • Approving new members from outside Clubhouse — whether via secret link, approving nominated members, or searching your contacts — uses your allotted club invites.
  • How do I start a club room?We want clubs to be able to quickly assemble club members, privately or publicly. You can do this from the home screen (i.e. All Rooms or discovery screen). If you tap the large green “Start a New Room” button, you’ll see the Clubs you’re a member of. To start a room, tap the club icon!
    • Private rooms: By default, Club rooms will be private to just members of your club. Talk privately with your group or even use it as a “green room” before your show goes live.
    • Public rooms: If / when you decide you want to open the room up, just tap “Let visitors in” and it will become visible to others on Clubhouse.
  • Which club members can start a room?
    • If you’re a Club founder, you can host private or public rooms with the Club brand. When you start a Club room, all club members will be notified. If you make that room public, all Club followers will also be notified.
    • If you’re a club member, starting a club room will only notify members of the club that follow you. While the room is private, the Club brand will be displayed so other club members can find it. You cannot host public Club rooms as a member (if you open up a private club room to the public, the Club brand is removed).

Hosting club events

  • How do I add a club event to the bulletin? To add an event to the in-app bulletin, tap the Calendar icon from the home screen. Then tap the calendar+ icon in the top right and fill out the details:
    • Event Name, co-hosts or guests, date, time, and public description
    • If you’re club founder, you can also add a club as a host for the event. This will help you build a repeat audience. Anyone who follows your club will get notified of future events.
  • Can I co-host an event with another club?Right now, there’s no way to formally include more than 1 club as an event host on the calendar. However, many clubs collaborate on events informally.Once an event room has started, the admins of multiple clubs can also invite their respective communities to join the conversation, by tapping the “+” at the bottom of the room and selecting the club.

Growing your club

  • How can I add people to my club? You can add people to your club in a few ways:
    • Search Clubhouse*:* You can invite anyone on Clubhouse who follows you (this is to prevent spam). These invites are unlimited, and do not utilize your available club invites.
    • Review nominated members: members of the group who aren’t founders can now suggest members to the group; you can review these suggestions and accept or reject from here. Adding nominated members who are already on Clubhouse does not use invites; adding nominated members from outside Clubhouse does use invites.
    • Copy secret invite link: you can share this link with someone if you don’t have their phone number (note: this link isn’t unique, so it could be forwarded by that individual)
    • Search Contacts: You can invite anyone off Clubhouse that is in your contact list. Invitees will get a text including your name and your club name.
    • Invite followers to become members*:* When someone has followed your club, you can then tap on them and invite them to become a member.

    A couple of notes:

    • We only support iOS, and some international carriers block text invites.
    • Approving new members from outside Clubhouse — whether via secret link, approving nominated members, or searching your contacts — uses your allotted club invites.
  • How many invites do clubs get?We now allocate invites automatically based on contribution to the community—so just keep hosting great conversations with your club and invites will automatically appear in your account! When you have more invites available, you’ll get an in-app notification. One reason for this is that we don’t want to have many clubs that grow their member base but are inactive; this is generally not a good experience for club members. There is no specific minimum or maximum, but we are also thoughtful about the fact that we have many clubs / requests in, and want to distribute across all these communities.
